2008 Northeast Region Chief Interview

Northeast Region Chief, Patrick Rooney

2008 Northeast Region Chief Patrick Rooney

How do you feel to be a national officer? What do you find most exciting about the role?

Honestly, I still find myself very overwhelmed to be in the position of Northeast Region Chief, it’s a fantastic honor.

What are you most looking forward to?

As I said, I feel incredibly honored to be a national officer of this Order. What I’m most excited about is the opportunity to be involved with a program such as ArrowCorps5. At no time before has any Arrowman had the chance to be involved with a national service project on this scale.

What are your earliest memories of the OA?

I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work on organizing the NLS’ of the Northeast Region. The NLS program provides the Order with its Lodge, Section, Regional and National leaders of the future and its very exciting to be a part of that.

What was your first leadership position and what was the greatest lesson you learned from it?

The first position I ever held in the Order of the Arrow was Chapter Vice Chief for Unit Programs. That may sound like a ridiculous title, but the basic idea of my job was to manage the Troop/Team OA Representative (TOAR) program for my chapter. What I learned from this job is that you cannot always expect people to put the same amount of effort as you into a project. Sometimes you need a little extra drive to help motivate those you are working with.

What is the coolest thing you've done in Scouting?

Without a doubt, being a part of the Eagle Scout Honor Guard for the funeral of President Gerald Ford.

What makes you proudest to be an Arrowman?

I’m proud to be an Arrowman because of the organization. There is no other brotherhood that provides service on a level that the OA does, and I’m proud to be a part of that.

What awesome things have you done in the OA?

NOAC. I’ve attended two NOAC’s (2004 and 2006) and I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed myself more at a Scouting event.

What makes the OA so cool?

What makes the OA so cool is the wide spectrum of opportunities it provides. From events on a smaller scale such as a lodge’s work weekend or fellowship to events on a national scale such as ArrowCorps5 and NOAC, there is always an opportunity for service and fun.
